Doug Stott

Zone 4, Diamond, So. Harney

Term: June 2027

Doug Stott is a native Oregonian from Frenchglen who is currently living and actively ranching in Diamond. Doug was a Vietnam Navy veteran. He is married to Sherry Otley and they have four grown and married children. For over 30 years, Doug owned and operated Redmond Greenhouse. He has a passion for gardening, cooking, hunting and fishing.

Sandy Volle

Zone 2, Burns, Hines

Term: June 2027

Sandy Volle was born in Washington and started school in Burns. Though she finished school in Portland, her roots are in Harney County. Sandy’s father grew up in Crane and her family came over every year to hunt, fish, brand and move cows. Sandy and her siblings spent many summers at their Grandma Elsie’s ranch. She finally returned to live in Harney County when she and her ex-husband bought Coleman Creek Ranch. A retired teacher, Sandy taught a total of 29 years in Marsing, ID, Wendall, ID and Burns. She also accumulated an additional 12 years as a substitute teacher, which she continues to do. Sandy began her career as a PE, Health and Science teacher, as well as a coach in Idaho and ended it with 18 years as a Special Education Life Skills teacher. She coached the Crane Varsity Girls Basketball team from 1991-1993. Her son, Ty, his wife, Stephanie, and their three kids live here in Burns while her daughter, Heather, her husband, Jonny, and their three sons live in Nampa, Idaho. Her six grandkids are the heartbeat of her existence. Sandy loves to read and is a CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocate), SMART reading volunteer, and HC Nazarene Church Board Member in addition to being on the Harney ESD Board. Sandy’s passions are her grandkids, her faith, and all people!

Charles Schmidt, Vice Chair

Zone 1, Burns, Hines

Term: June 2025

Charles Schmidt was born and raised in rural Northwest Missouri. He came to Harney County, compliments of the United States Air Force, assigned to the Burns Air Force Station. During that time, he met his future wife, Linda. They have two daughters and six grandchildren. After an Air Force career that took Charles to Vietnam and the family to multiple stateside and overseas assignments, Charles and Linda returned to Harney County, settling in Hines. During a second career at Greater Oregon Federal Credit Union, Charles became active in the Elks scholarship program and at the local and state levels of The American Legion advocating for veterans and promoting the Legion’s youth programs. Governor Kulongoski appointed Charles to the Advisory Board to the Director of Oregon Department of Veteran Affairs (ODVA) to two 4-year terms. He also served five years on the Harney Education Support District (HESD) Board before resigning to become Oregon’s first National Commander of The American Legion in the organization’s 102-year history. When he is not advocating for veterans and Legion youth programs, or serving on the school board, you will find Charles enjoying the outdoors and Harney County.

Charles Dunten

Zone 3, Crane, Pine Creek, Drewsey

Term: June 2025

Charles Dunten was born in Drewsey and grew up on the family ranch. Now, over 70 years later he is still on that same ranch. Charles continues to work on the ranch and is actively involved in the Harney County Fair, having only missed one fair since he was born. He is married to his wife Janice since 1968 and together they have five children and 13 grandchildren. Charles loves the ranching life and family, He faithfully follows his 13 grandchildren as they participate in school and extra-curricular activities. He is actively involved in his community and can be found at sporting events, fund-raisers and social gatherings. Charles has served on the ESD board for over 30 years.

Dan Brown, Chair

Zone 5, Suntex, Frenchglen, Double O

Term: June 2027

Dan Brown is a life-long Oregonian who lives in Riley where he and his wife raise hay. Dan grew up in Redmond. He and his wife of 52 years, Mary, practiced medicine in Bend, where they lived for 40 years before moving to Harney County. They are both Army veterans, serving in Vietnam. Dan and Mary have four children and nine grandchildren, two of whom attend the Double O school. Dan enjoys sports, reading and anything outdoors, particularly fly fishing, hunting and camping.

Thomas Doman

Zone 6, At Large

Term: June 2027

Julie Weikel

Zone 7, At Large

Term: June 2025

Julie Weikel resides about 30 miles south of Burns. She practiced veterinary medicine for over 45 years and was a pioneer in the field of large animal practice. Julie’s mother is from Harney County and taught in Denio, Oregon. She is proud of the fact that she has returned to the very county that her mother lived in. During her free time Julie is involved in a variety of community committees with a lifelong passion towards creating a better life for livestock.
